Yarn is a general term for yarn and thread, a thin and soft continuous strip made of textile fibers with a certain thickness and physical and mechanical properties. Including yarn, thread, filament, etc.

There are many types of yarns, and yarns can be classified according to different starting points.

According to the structure of the yarn

  (1) Filament yarn

Yarns are processed from filaments. Features: smooth, uniform, strong gloss, high strength. There are ordinary filaments and textured filaments.

  1. Ordinary filament: there are monofilament, multifilament, twisted yarn, and composite twisted yarn.

  2. Modified filament (modified filament): Under the action of heat and machinery, the chemical fiber precursor is deformed to make it have curls, spirals, rings, and other appearance characteristics to present bulky and stretchable filament yarns, called modified filaments or textured yarn. Including high elastic textured yarn, low elastic textured yarn, air textured yarn, network yarn

  (2) Short fiber yarn

Yarn made from cotton, wool, hemp, spun silk, or chemical staple fiber through spinning. Features: fluffy structure, plump appearance, good warmth retention, and comfort.

Short fiber yarn (staple yarn) includes: single yarn, ply yarn, double twisted ply yarn, fancy twisted yarn, etc.

Single yarn is made of short fibers bundled into strips and twisted. After untwisting, the fibers are parallel and loose. Ply yarn is formed by combining and twisting two or more single yarns, and becomes single yarn after untwisting. Double-twisted strands are formed by combining and twisting two or more strands, such as ropes. Fancy twisted yarn is twisted from core yarn, decorative yarn, and fixed yarn.

  (3) Combined yarn

A yarn is processed by using two or more single yarns or filament bundles with different properties. It has a compound effect and a special appearance.

  1. Core yarn (core yarn)

It is a yarn spun with filament or short fiber yarn as the core and twisted together with other fibers or yarns. For example, the polyester-cotton core-spun yarn is made of polyester multifilament as the yarn core, and the outer cotton fiber is twisted and spun, which can be used to weave burnt-out domes for curtains, tablecloths, etc.; spandex cotton core-spun yarn uses spandex filament as the yarn The core is twisted and spun out of cotton fiber, which can be used to weave elastic jeans and pants.

  2. Wrapped yarn

Also known as covered silk yarn, it uses short fiber as the yarn core and is covered with another filament yarn. The outer covering yarn wraps the core yarn in a spiral manner. It is characterized by evenness, bulkiness, smooth yarn with less hairiness, high strength, and fewer broken ends.

Covered yarns are mostly used for knitted fabrics requiring high elasticity, and some are used for woven fabrics. They are suitable for wearing sports tights, such as swimsuits, ski suits, women's underwear, etc. Covering yarn According to the application, select the appropriate core yarn and outer covering yarn, and its strength is higher than any single yarn.

According to the types of fibers that make up the yarn

  1. Pure yarn (pure yarn), such as cotton yarn, wool yarn, viscose fiber yarn, etc.

  2. Blended yarn (blended yarn)

According to the dry weight blending ratio, the one with the larger proportion comes first; when the proportion is the same, the order is arranged in the order of natural fiber, synthetic fiber, and regenerated fiber.

  Such as 65/35 polyester/cotton, 50/50 polyester/viscose, and 50/33/17 polyester/cotton/brocade.

  According to the spinning method

Traditional spinning (ring spinning): carded yarn, combed yarn, waste spinning; new spinning (eg: rotor (air) spinning, electrostatic spinning, eddy current spinning, etc.)

According to the winding method: cop yarn, cheese yarn, and hank yarn.

According to the fiber length of the constituent yarns: cotton-type yarn, wool-type yarn, and medium-long fiber-type yarn.

According to the use of yarn: yarn for weaving, yarn for knitting, yarn for raising piles, yarn for the special industry.

According to the thickness of the yarn

Example: Cotton yarn can be divided into:

  1. Ultra-low linear density yarn (ultra-fine yarn) refers to very fine yarn with a linear density of 10tex and below.

  2. Low linear density yarn (fine yarn) refers to finer yarn with a linear density of 11 to 20 tex.

  3. Medium-density yarn (medium-tex yarn) refers to yarn with a linear density of 21-30tex, which is between coarse-tex yarn and fine-tex yarn.

  4. High linear density yarn (coarse special yarn) refers to thicker yarn with a linear density above 32tex.

According to the dyeing and finishing and post-processing of yarn: natural color yarn, bleached yarn, 100% dope dyed polyester yarn, colored spun yarn, singeing yarn, mercerized yarn.
